.The Journey.
Every journey of a thousand miles starts with a single
step.
Dawn breaks, the beams of sun tearing through the canopey
of threes overhead, bright if not warming. The bird song increases in volume
and impact, the chirps of the crickets die down. You realise strangely that
you are not in the least bit tired; perhaps it is the exitement of being
in this strange, wondersous place. Hearing no answer from the wind, you begin
to walk aimlessly through the woods for a short time. And then, in an instant,
you suddenly become aware of a presence behind you. Or beside you. Or infront
of you. You stop, feeling for the first time the pangs of fear. Something
, somewhere, is watching you. You look around, squinting your eyes at the
bushes and shrubs that surround you.
As though sensing your new fear, the creature
giggles and hops out of the tall grasses.
"You called?" he asks. Unable to hide
your surprise, you find yourself staring at this new beast. Like Nightlight,
it is, of course, a pony. But this one is different somehow.
"I know what you're thinking," he says in his clipped cockney accent.
"But I can assure you that I am a pony of the, uh, proper persuasion.
You, bein' human an' all, might know me as a My Little Pony, I guess."
"You're Sprightly?" You ask, frowning. Standing before you, smaller
in build than Nightlight, with a mint green body and flowing golden hair,
this Sprightly is far from what you'd expect of a 'My Little Pony'. He's
'scraggly', with tufts of hair on his legs and a devilish grin. Yet
there he was, in Ponyland...Equin...
You find your gaze sweeping down to his flanks.
He turns and looks you in the eye. "Nope...don't got one of them. But that
don't make me any less of a pony, right? I'm like one of them vagabond
ponies,...I live in this here wood. Yes, to answer your question, I am
Sprightly."
"I don't remember seeing you when I was a child," you tell the pony,
frowning slightly as your mind tried desperately to put a memory to the name.
You find yourself wondering what a vagabond pony is, but Sprightly's laugh
distract you from your thoughts.
"Nah, 'course not. Hasbro didn't make all us ponies. Too many of us...
when their...reprisentatives...came here, they just took a few examples and
pow! Made a thousand or so toys. Toys! Hah." He moves close and whispers
in your ear. "Who needs toys when you can have the genuine article, eh? Now,
are you ready or what?"
"Ready for what?"
Sprightly rolls his big green eyes. "To explore Equin, of course!
Now...where do you wanna go?"
He lifts the map towards you and you examine the ancient scrawl
and faded diagrams. With a nod, you make your choise.
"Oh wait," Sprightly calls after you as you head on your way. You
turn and he throws something towards you. You catch it and inspect it in
your hands. A pebble, not much larger than a coin. You turn it over and to
your astonishment, there is a pre-history-esque painting of a pony running
on it. "You'll need this," he says matter of factly, "Especially if you get
lost in the woods."
